K-2 Program - Our Future Stars
.
The most important thing at this developmental age is that they enjoy the game. For most it will be their first instructional sessions for soccer. We want them to come back. It is a fun and exciting game and we need to show them that. It is impossible to tell who the stars will be. The bigger and stronger players may look better now, but the others will catch up in size over the years and the best players will turn out to be the ones that learned 'how' to play the game of soccer. It is our job to guide them...
Patience
"The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it".
Arnold Glasow
A coach at this level is often a doctor, nurse, psychiatrist, planner, coach, negotiator, coordinator, friend, idol and on and on. We all know that we can have a different experience every day with 5-7 year olds. However, it is very rewarding by mid season to see them actually doing things that you taught them. It just doesn't get any better than that...
Be patient...
Confidence
"For those that say I can't do it...well,
WATCH ME"!".
You may feel out of place, but be confident. There are others around you that can help. Seek out the K-2 Coordinator, or the DOC or another coach. Don't be shy about asking questions. We don't expect you to know it all, because we don't either. Parents will help if you need an extra hand. It's all about making sure the players enjoy the day. And just remember, you know way more than the players do so...
Be confident.
A K-2 Practice Plan
Below you will find a complete set of practices for the first half of the season. These are approved by the DOC and were designed by JD Stearns, a two-time All-State high school player at Bolton High School and current member of the LEC Champion, Eastern Connecticut State University Soccer Program.
The following sessions are designed as a guide. Please modify them to meet the level of your team - K, 1st or 2nd grade. Also, be conscious of their attention levels as you proceed. For more advanced players - progress the difficulty of the drill.
Practice 1 Practice 2 Practice 3 Practice 4
K-2 Plan Second Half
Here are the practice plans for the 2nd half of your season. If you want you can repeat or reuse any drill from the first half instead. If a 'K' coach only ever uses sessions 1-4, that is fine. Players must progress to the level that they are capable of playing.
Determine how well they made it through the first half. The later sessions become more advanced. If you need to take a step back - feel free to do so and/or repeat sessions. Week 5 begins with a review of what was learned.
